Energy policy crunch in July

15 June 1999

The World Bank’s energy policy paper will come to the Board on 20 July, following two and a half years of discussions. Many Bank Executive Directors, environmental and energy specialists and NGOs argue for targets to be set on reducing local pollution and greenhouse emissions and increasing support for renewables. But important Bank Vice-Presidencies oppose these and the final paper may be a weak compromise.

The paper will be posted on the web at the end of June: www.worldbank.org.
