Bank whistleblower policy a “cardboard shield”

US NGO Government Accountability Project (GAP) has applauded the World Bank’s new policy on whistleblower protection, but expressed disappointment over the failure to ensure two “crucial” protections; those on access to an impartial forum to hear claims, and a guarantee of employment for staff who successfully contest retaliatory dismissal. GAP legal director Tom Devine described the new policy, announced in early June, as “a gaudily decorated cardboard shield”.
