The UK parliamentary committee on international development travelled to Washington in early November to interview World Bank, IMF and NGO staff. It was the first visit since the Committee was established last year and is intended to start discussions in areas including:

  1. development impact and effectiveness;
  2. coordination mechanisms;
  3. conflict prevention/post-conflict reconstruction;
  4. women and development;
  5. debt relief.

The Bretton Woods Project, Christian Aid, Oxfam and the Rainforest Foundation prepared submissions for Committee members.

It is understood that, as well as incorporating some of their findings into their forthcoming reports on women and on conflict, the Committee is considering annual hearings on the World Bank and how the UK seeks to manage and change it.
