A new review of IMF conditionality will assess the conditions applied to financial crisis countries, and recommend future approaches. The IMF staff desk study will be based on IMF and external reports on the appropriateness, and effectiveness of conditions, including on social outcomes. Previous internal evaluations of the IMF's response to the 1997-98 financial crisis have largely supported the IMF's actions. So NGOs are calling for an external evaluation of IMF policies in South East Asia, under the new external evaluation process to be agreed in the Spring. Papers relevant to the IMF conditionality review can be sent to Tim Lane at the IMF, 700 19th St NW, Washington DC 20431, E-m tlane@imf.org.
