Two recent publications by NGO International Rivers unearth how the legacy of past World Bank dam projects remains unaddressed and find that the Bank lacks the necessary tools to address the social and environmental legacy of its dam projects. The World Bank's big dam legacy examines Bank failures in relation to past and current dam projects, and makes recommendations on each. Shattered lives and broken promises assesses the Bank-funded Pakistan National Drainage Programme (see Update 55) and finds serious shortcomings in relation to the management action plan initiated following the report by the Bank's Inspection Panel which found violations of six safeguard policies in southern Sindh province.
