A complaint to the World Bank Inspection Panel has resulted in a report confirming violations of Bank policies on forced evictions and environmental hazards at a planned landfill near Accra, Ghana. The complaint was made by the NGO Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE), on behalf of the Agyemankata community (see Update 59). The Panel found that the original environmental and social assessment was seriously flawed and called for meaningful consultation, discussion of alternative resettlement options and analysis of alternative project sites. COHRE's Bret Thiele stressed that "advocates must continue to push for the inclusion of human rights in the Panel's analyses." This text may be freely used providing the source is credited.
