IFIwatch.tv and Bretton Woods Project website support (Volunteer 2-3 days)

The Bretton Woods Project is seeking a volunteer to offer technical support and bring in fresh ideas to develop the media aggregation and sharing functions of two websites that turn a critical eye towards the actions of international financial institutions: IFIWatch.TV and rethinkingfinance.org. Although the position is unpaid, volunteers will be reimbursed for lunch and travel expenses, and it may lead to paid work later.

The Bretton Woods Project works with civil society organisations and activists worldwide to help them press for changes in the World Bank and IMF. It bridges groups working in development, environment and human rights.

IFIWatch.TV offers windows on the environment, development, on economic justice, financial architecture (reform) and public investment - documentaries, TV shows, animations, meeting and protest reports, feature films, music videos, expert analysis and more - plus news, blogs and detailed documents.

RethinkingFinance.org turns a critical eye towards the reforms proposed by policy makers during the current global financial crisis. The website, which is updated by several international civil society organisations and individuals, puts forward alternative ideas and analyses, provides information about and comments on latest events, and gives an overview of civil society and other peoples' activities.

We are looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to commit 2-3 days a week to assist with technical development and usability of the websites; share administrative duties; and to help develop proposals for future funding. At present both websites use Drupal.

Location: London, UK; Much of the work can be done from home

A. General information

About the Bretton Woods Project

The Bretton Woods Project was established in 1995 by a network of UK non-government organisations (NGOs) to help them press for changes in the World Bank and IMF. It bridges groups working in development, environment and human rights. The Project produces a newsletter and policy briefings, organises meetings and develops campaigning and advocacy opportunities for UK groups and groups in other countries. The Project has developed a strong reputation among civil society groups, officials, the media and academia as a source of information on these powerful global institutions. It is based in the offices of ActionAid in Archway, North London.

Role Purpose

The volunteer will assist in the technical development of the websites; share administrative duties; and help develop proposals for future funding.

B. Key accountabilities

1) Admin, research and specification for next phase of networked data-sharing

• Establish new and moderate existing feeds of relevant media for aggregation and sharing with BWP's networks.
• Review and research user feedback on existing FLOSS aggregation tools (ifiwatch.tv and rethinkingfinance.org).
• Explore simple changes that can make the tools easier to use.
• Liaise with core users and developers to specify next phase of development in both technical and general language, translating where necessary.

2) Fundraising

• Help identify suitable funding bodies for this work
• Develop and submit substantial funding bids, in close consultation with colleagues on both technical and user-focused aspects.

C. Role-related knowledge, experience and skills

Essential

• Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in software design or management, project co-ordination, user-focused consultation and user interface development, or related subject.
• Knowledge of theoretical, legal and practical issues related to Web 3.0 and free software, specifically non-profit media searching, aggregation and sharing
• At least 3 months experience of fundraising and/or web content management, either paid or voluntary
• Proven research skills and ability to work with spreadsheets and conduct data analysis.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Flexibility, willingness to listen and to take on a wide variety of tasks
• Commitment to social justice, human rights and environmental sustainability.

Desirable

• Advanced knowledge of innovative data networking
• Work experience related to network co-ordination, financial regulation, or development finance
• Good general knowledge on development, environment and international public finance
