In June, the new UK coalition government announced a hasty review of its funding to multilaterals, including the World Bank Group. Though its final report will be published early next year, it is expected to influence the UK’s contribution to the upcoming IDA replenishment (see Update 69). The review will focus on “value for money” and relevance “to the UK’s objectives on poverty reduction.” A July DFID report revealed that the UK gives almost $1.4 billion annually to the Bank, more than to any other multilateral. In a submission to the review, UK-based NGO the Bretton Woods Project argued that the UK should focus “on pushing for policy and institutional change at the Bank, and should not increase its funding to the institution.” This text may be freely used providing the source is credited.
