A joint NGO letter recently helped prevent a plan by World Bank Managing Directors to axe the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development Vice Presidency (ESSD). The ESSD Vice Presidency coordinates the Bank’s Rural, Social, and Environment Departments and represents them at senior levels.
The move was proposed as part of the ongoing reorganisation at the Bank, which has already caused serious cutbacks and a loss of preset budgets for social and environmental appraisal.
