Discussions proposed on economic growth

15 September 1998

The Bretton Woods Project has been working with Both ENDS and other organisations to discuss a possible meeting to discuss the fundamental way that the World Bank/IMF measure development: economic growth. Many social scientists and environmentalists inside and outside the Bank have long argued that growth does not equal development and that its use as the key measure of progress obscures many vital questions, notably environmental limits and social equality. The proposed meeting would examine why the Bank and Fund have not taken up alternative indicators and perspectives, and how NGOs and researchers can work together to expose and change this situation.

A proposal is available from the Bretton Woods Project. Comments welcome.
