GAO Investigates IMF transparency

The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO), the audit and investigative agency of the U.S. Congress was requested in June to evaluate the adequacy of public disclosure in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) financial and surveillance operations. GAO objectives are to determine:

• the extent to which IMF publicly reveals information about (a) its own balance sheet; (b) the results of its annual Article IV consultations with member governments;
• whether increased public disclosure in these areas is warranted.
• The Office will issue two written reports by the end of this year.
