The President of the World Bank, James Wolfensohn, in Thailand in February for the UNCTAD meeting, refused to accept a letter from villagers affected by the Bank-backed Pak Mun Dam. Wolfensohn claimed the villagers have good livelihoods and those submitting the letter love to make chaos. Also, he said the World Bank in Thailand is taking care of this issue.
The villagers released a statement accusing Wolfensohn of “distorting the facts and misleading the public”. They again urged the World Bank to take responsibility for the destruction caused to their lives and to the ecology and fisheries of the Mun River, and work with the Thai government to decommission Pak Mun and restore the Mun River.
