Workers protest Burkina privatisation plans

10 September 2001

More than 1,000 workers from 13 public companies took to the streets of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in August chanting slogans such as “Down with wildcat liberalisation!” and “Down with Bretton Woods injunctions!”. Union leaders called the 24-hour strike in protest at the government’s decision to privatise their enterprises. They want parliament to revoke a privatisation bill passed in July.
