World Bank: free press is good for you!

The World Association of Newspapers and the World Bank released a book evaluating the media’s role in either helping or hindering development. Beyond some nice words about the essential role of access to information in a successful development strategy, writers address the sticky question of how to establish and maintain an independent media. “Substituting state-controlled media with a media controlled by one or two oligarchs has not restored confidence in the media, nor has it strengthened the nascent democracies.”
