After years of political and economic disputes, the IMF has reinitiated negotiations with Haiti, suggesting that the western hemisphere’s poorest nation will be able to resume receiving aid and loans. Dan Beeton of the Center for Economic and Policy Research urged IFIs and donor governments to “finally permit Haiti’s economic development on its own terms, respecting its national sovereignty as it formulates plans for economic recovery.” Beeton and others have accused the United States of orchestrating the withdrawal of the IMF and development banks from Haiti because it opposed the popularly elected government of the Caribbean nation.
