African leaders call for greater say in IFIs

17 April 2009

At the close of March’s IMF-Africa conference, South Africa’s finance minister Trevor Manuel sent a clear message to G20 leaders, demanding “developing countries and emerging markets to be given a greater voice in the governance of the IMF”. In a joint statement, delegates at the conference stressed that Africans must be a part of the solution to the global economic crisis and: “Africa must be fully represented in the evolving global architecture”. Delegates also agreed that part of increasing support for Africa would come through further strengthening of Africa’s voice at the Fund.
