World Bank project in Sri Lanka criticised by Tamils

14 June 2011

In April Tamilnet.com, an independent newswire service dedicated to issues concerning Tamil people in Sri Lanka, accused the World Bank of contributing to the “the dismemberment of the Eezham Tamil nation in the island.” The Bank will provide 100 million US dollars for a road project connecting the island’s east and west regions. While the Bank’s Country Director for Sri Lanka, Diarietou Gaye, said that such connections “will be critical for Sri Lanka to realise its ambitious development goals”, Tamilnet.com stated that “the World Bank has taken it as a policy to abet the Sri Lankan state in its structural genocide of Tamils.”
